Queen Lucy Hernandez and her court, consisting of Encarnacion "Chon" Manzano (left), Mary Macias (second from left), and Josefina Lara (second from right), reigned over a daylong fiesta complete with a parade, music, and dancing. September 16, or Mexican Independence Day, was a major event on the social calendar of barrios across Southern California.
