Many worked at jobs just to make ends meet when work was available. Henry Medrano Carrasco did construction work, plumbing, and side jobs. He, along with his brothers enjoyed playing baseball. A March calendar page consists of a photograph of students with a postcard saying "1921 Confirmation Class, Saint Anthony's Catholic Church in Casa Blanca". The picture was taken in front of the Ahumada Market. At the bottom of the page is the month translated into both English and Spanish. Based on the photograph, the students ranged from adolescents to teenagers. Also, the students are dressed in formal attire with the girls in dresses and the boys in suits. 2011 January Calendar page 2, Mendoza Market Postcard
A postcard reflecting on the history of Mendoza Market by Linda Salinas-Thompson. The month of January is written in English as well as in Spanish (Enero). The images on the page consist of the exterior of the Mexican-American family-owned business ("Mendoza Mkt") as well as photographs of Victor and Lola Mendoza. The postcard reads, "Mendoza Market: In 1913 Victor Mendoza moved to the United States from Michoacan, Mexico, and settled in the community of Casa Blanca. In 1915 he married; where he and his wife Lola, and opened their first market on Bunker Street in 1920. Two months later they moved a block away to 7450 Evans Street; the Mendozas because people were leaving without paying their bills. In 1936 he prepared to close the store, being in debt for $7,000.00, but friends came forth to help him. After the Depression, businesses started growing again, people started coming back from Mexico. After WWII, started picking up. IN 1945, Mendoza Market was relocated to 3199 Madison Street. The Mendoza's had five children, who all helped and worked at the store. His customers included children and grandchildren of long-time patrons. After operating a grocery store for more than 50 years the Mendozas retired, stating they had many happy moments with customers that came in. Linda Salinas-Thompson." -
Simona Valero Interview
Simona Valero has been part of the Casa Blanca Community for decades since she was a little girl until much later into her life. She lived in Casa Blanca with her parents and family member during the boom of citrus in Southern California. She and her husband John met as a result of the bracero program that allowed John to come and work in the United States. She dedicated much of her life to the development of much of Casa Blanca’s culture and social programs. Not only was she part of Casa Blanca’s development but she also experienced many of the effects of citrus work during that time like many of Casa Blanca. Simona discusses the various cultures, religions, and people that were apart of Casa Blanca since her time as part of the community. Simona also provides various anecdotes of family events and experiences that made her who she is to this day. -

Bashid Muhammad Darwah Interview at the Citrus State Historic Park 2017 Tasting
This interview focuses on the citrus industry from a nontraditional perspective-that of an Afghani immigrant. The interview details the wars experienced by Bashid while living in Afghanistan prior to his arrival in the USA. It also expands upon the challenges faced by Afghani agriculturalists in the Nangarhar Provence of Afghanistan. -
Eunice Lisberg, Helen Armstrong and Thelma King Interview
Helen Armstrong, Eunice Lisberg and Thelma King discuss their lives in Riverside and Monrovia. This interview mainly focuses on the economic disparities faced by the black community. They recount their experiences growing up in segregated schooling in Southern California, as well as how her family survived the great depression. Lastly, debates revolving around the origins of citrus emerge in which the region's history comes into dispute. -
Steve Reyes Interview
This interview largely focuses on the practices involved in working in a citrus grove. Steve Reyes recalls his time as a "rata" a child laborer working in the citrus industry. The main practice outlined in the interview was smudging, a process in which smoke was used to prevent frost accumulation on the citrus plants. Reyes emphasis on a united family unit being core to the old values of Mexican American life.
