Casa Blanca Elementary School

Military Personnel
Pre-WWII deployment image of military personnel. Many Mexican or Latino men and one Mexican or Latina women are in military uniform. Persons are standing and kneeling, some posing with weaponry. The military personnel range from Navy sailors both enlisted and officers along with other branches of the military (possibly Army, Airforce, and Marine Corp), A few individuals are in suits, and other styles of clothing typically associated with masculinity or the U.S. military. Joe and Ygnacia Venegas: Outdoors

1990 Mirella Munoz's interview discusses her early life in Mexico City, reared by her grandmother, and her immigration to the United States after what she describes as a very hard childhood. Mirella ultimately settled In Riverside California working as a sorter in the National Orange Company packinghouse. Mirella details work dynamics, packinghouse supervisors, unions, and education. -
Sala Ponnech Oral History
This interview details Sala Ponnech's involvement with union organizing efforts at UC Riverside in the 1970s and 1980s. As a young clerical worker, Sala became the chair of the local CSEA chapter, working closely with other activists like Lorraine Klein, Gladys Murphy, and Margaret Ellis. They faced challenges from management and competing unions like AFSCME, but were able to provide representation and support to many employees facing discipline or termination. However, the CSEA ultimately withdrew from the organizing effort, leaving AFSCME and other unions to compete for representation. Sala reflects on the power dynamics, gender dynamics, and political tensions that shaped the union organizing on campus during this period. -

Virginia Phillips Homegrown Heroes Full Interview
This is an oral history interview with Judge Virginia Phillips conducted on February 21, 2024. In this interview, Judge Phillips shares her childhood upbrining in Orange, California, and how she studied at UC Riverside before pursuing a law degree and eventually becoming a judge. The main highlight in this interview was Judge Phillips sharing her story on how she struck down the Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy in the United States military, altering the way that the LGBTQ+ community serves in the military today. Phillips also reflects on her active role in the community within Riverside and the Inland Empire and her commitment to her service within the community as a judge. -
Mark Takano Homegrown Heroes Full Interview
This interview with Congressman Mark Takano was conducted on March 15, 2024. Takano's interview covers his childhood growing up in Riverside, his family's history of Japanese incarceration during World War II, and his journey into politics. Takano shares that he grew up in the La Sierra, Arlington side of Riverside and his mom worked as a school secretary at North High School. It was through his high school experience that Takano grew an interest in public service and cites that as the beginning of his political journey. When running for State Assembly in 1994, Takano was outed by his opponent. Since then, Takano discusses the progress made on LGBTQ+ rights durings during his tenure in Congress. The rest of the interview discusses one of Takano's major legislative accomplishments, the PACT Act, which expanded benefits for veterans exposed to toxic substances, the Blue Water Navy Act, and the Compact Act for veteran mental health services. -
Darren Conkerite Oral History
In 1994 Darren Conkerite and his partner Scott opened Back to the Grind Coffeehouse which they created as a safe space for youth, the LGBTQ+ community, the arts, and political organizing. This interview begins with Conkerite discussing his family’s history in Lake Elsinore and his background in cheesemaking. He then details his meeting of his partner Scott and their decision to open Back the Grind in Riverside. Conkerite elaborates on how from the beginning he and Scott fostered community at Back to the Grind, supporting all types of people, the arts, and political organizing. He also discusses his history with Madeline Lee and David St. Pierre, two owners of the Menagerie gay bar, located next door to Back to the Grind. Conkerite provides details on the development of Riverside’s downtown area, which back in 1996 was not the vibrant space it is today. The interview concludes with him reflecting on several individuals active in LGBTQ+ organizing in the area and the role of Back to the Grind as a community space. -
Benita Ramsey Oral History
Benita Ramsey has served the Inland Empire as an activist for over 30 years, working with organizations including the Rainbow Pride Youth Alliance, Divine Truth Unity Fellowship Church, and TruEvolution. She begins by discussing the Unity Fellowship Church movement, a faith based movement dedicated to supporting individuals with HIV/AIDS from the 1980s to today, and her involvement in its Riverside chapter. Ramsey then details the role of HIV/AIDS activism today in the Inland Empire, in which supporting an aging population as well as youth is central. She outlines the beginnings of TruEvolution, which she was an original board member of, that grew out of the Inland and Desert AIDS Projects. Ramsey also remembers the AIDS Quilt Project as well as several key figures in LGBTQ+ Riverside history including Kay Smith and Jeffrey Owens. She discusses the need for and formation of Rainbow Pride Youth Alliance, an organization that was the first of its kind in focusing on the needs of LGBTQ+ youth in the I.E.. Ramsey ends the interview by reflecting on the current state of I.E. LGBTQ+ organizing during a time of rampant anti-LGBTQ+ hate and anti-trans legislation, noting that organizations such as Rainbow Pride Youth Alliance, TruEvolution, and Divine Truth Unity Fellowship Church will continue to support and uplift the I.E.’s LGBTQ+ community, preach love, and overcome hate. -
